Bipartisan Climate Legislation Ready To Go

April 26, 2010

You may have heard that over the weekend a U.S. Senate bid to introduce business-friendly climate and energy legislation imploded, and instead of a grand rollout today, all sides were arguing over who was to blame for the debacle. While the story of high political drama with Senators Kerry (MA), Graham (SC), and Lieberman (CT) continues without results, the bill of FCNL’s and a growing number of allies’ choice – the CLEAR Act – remains the only bipartisan bill ready to go that will usher in the new clean economy and begin to turn back the march of global warming.

A trio of senators led by Sen. John Kerry has now set and missed multiple deadlines for the release of their bill, lowering expectations that the legislation will ever move forward. The reason this time for indefinite delay was not because the bill text was unfinished, but rather that the only Republican of the trio, Sen. Lindsey Graham, was walking away, ostensibly due to the Senate Democratic Leadership’s prioritization of immigration over energy legislation. In any case, the whole thing was hard to watch as Sen. Kerry and others scrambled to pick up the pieces.

The window for getting anything major done in the senate during an election year is fast closing, and FCNL is pushing as hard as ever to have the simple and fair Clean Limits and Energy for America’s Renewal (CLEAR) Act, S.2877 become the vehicle for climate and energy legislative action. Unlike the Kerry-Graham-Lieberman proposal, the CLEAR Act has no permanent giveaways to polluters and ensures the majority of the populous will be better off as we begin to decarbonize the economy.

Urge your Senator today to cosponsor the Cantwell-Collins CLEAR Act – the vehicle for a fair and simple bipartisan climate and energy solution.

The argument that we need to be 100% sure about the Science for Global Climate Change conveys such a lack of knowledge about Science in general. If a persons doctor told them there was a 89% chance that they needed to have surgery, they wouldn’t wait until the doctors were 100% sure. This is the way all Science works.

Global warming, according to many scientists, is a natural cycle out of the hands of man. Mars is also undergoing global warming. Why don’t we blame the sun and look to real science rather than politically oriented/controlled science.
