Pope Praises Global Ban on Cluster Bombs

August 12, 2010

Cindy Buhl of Rep. Jim McGovern’s office just sent me a note that the Pope has strongly endorsed the global ban on cluster bombs.  That treaty — like the treaty to ban landmines — entered into force without the U.S. joining it. Rep. Jim McGovern (MA) and Senator Patrick Leahy (VT) are champions for these treaties.  People of New England should be proud.

Cindy sent me the link to “America Magazine: the National Catholic Weekly” which has a story “Pope Praises Ban on Cluster Bombs.” (By the way, our former Hill colleague, Father Drew Christiansen, went to New York in 2005 to be the editor-in-chief of America Magazine.)

As you know, we at FCNL have been active in the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines (USCBL) for years, and the USCBL has called on President Obama to sign the cluster bomb treaty and on the Senate to ratify it.

The Obama administration has not taken the initiative to join the cluster bomb ban treaty.  It is currently in the midst of a review of U.S. policy on anti-personnel landmines and may announce its findings on landmines later this year.

Now would be a good time to let your Senators know that you want them to take a public stand for the U.S. joining both the landmine treaty and the treaty to ban cluster bombs.  — JV
