U.S. Military Pushes Renewable Energy

October 5, 2010

Today’s New York Times reports that the U.S. military is pushing aggressively to develop renewable energy, in large part because reliance on fossil fuels is undermining the war effort in Afghanistan and threatening national security over the long term.  Reading the article I can’t help wonder if, a bit like the internet, the military will end up making major advances in renewable technology someday.  And with that come plenty of questions about the good and ill uses of the military’s massive budget and R&D capacities.

For more on how the military is pushing renewable energy, but at the same time fueling U.S. fossil fuel dependence through war, see FCNL’s policy brief, Global Warming Heats Up Global Conflict.
